Global power cable giant Prysmian set an industry record by installing a 500-kV high-voltage DC cable
on the seabed at a depth of 2,150 meters.
Prysmian stated that this ultra-deep water laying sea trial is the deepest so far in the power industry,
setting a new benchmark for submarine cable laying.
The test cable was installed on the Tyrrhenian Link project, a €1.7 billion ($1.84 billion) project in which
Prysmian will design, supply and lay more than 1,500 kilometers of submarine cables. , to realize power
connection and transmission between Sardinia, Sicily and southern Italy, and strengthen the construction
of the Mediterranean energy hub.
Prysmian said the cable is designed using a composite material based on synthetic fibers and is 50%
lighter than steel when deployed in water. This also represents the development direction of a new
generation of cable materials and technology. The same cable has been successfully used previously
on 550m and 1000m projects.
PRYSMIAN KABEL und SYSTEME GMBH is a global power cable giant with a market share of more than
10% in the global communications and power cable market.
